Hush, Hush

Review: Hush, Hush - Becca Fitzpatrick
Release Date: October 13, 2009

Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 400
Rating: ★★★★

For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Despite what many people had to say about this, it wasn't really a wow book for me. I mean, it was really good but it wasn't something I'd sit up at night thinking about. Fitzpatrick has an amazing ability to paint pictures with her words and I felt as if I was alongside the characters.

It didn't seem to me, however, that it was really thought out. It was one of those everything-is-predictable books. I knew what would happen in the end as I was reading it, so there really wasn't much of the suspense factor.

The romance between Nora and Patch was cute, but at times Patch was very...I don't know...creepy. It sometimes got to the point where it was like "why is this our love interest again?" Many people really loved this book, and I wanted to, but I ended up merely liking it.
Then again, I'm really picky with the books I read and I felt like this wasn't as "punch-in-the-gut" as it could have been, or as it should have been. Though I definitely still recommend it, because it was a good book. It was. It just wasn't you know, the best book ever or something.

Nora was a great character, but I found Vee to be the "typical best friend" in a lot of YA novels... but at sometimes she made me laugh because of her stupid decisions ;P

Anyways, this book gets four stars and I think I'll pick up Crescendo as well :)

xoxo, until next time.

  1. Nice Review! I'm one of those people who loved this book a lot (it actually was one of my favorites of 2009), but your reasons for not completely loving it are definitely understandable. I mean, I for one can agree that Patch was a bit creepy and the ending was predictable, but still I really enjoyed it. Hopefully, you'll enjoy the sequel more if you give it the chance. :)

  2. It seems like a lot of YA paranormal these days are falling into a rut. The creepy hero, the flat extras, the predictable ending. I'm sorry to hear that's the case with this one - I was excited to read it after all the hype. I feared that was the case though. Thank you for your honest review! I'll still probably pick it up, since you said it was still a fun read =)
